Manh Dang Dao is a Vietnamese student studying the Master of Business Information Management. It’s fair to say Manh is thriving at La Trobe. He was elected President of La Trobe’s Vietnamese Student Association (LAVISA) last year and to the Postgraduate Office committee earlier in 2016. He runs his own club called Foodie Connect and has won awards and scholarships for his leadership efforts.
But when he first came to Australia, getting involved in La Trobe events was more about making friends and settling in.
‘It was a big change for me when I adjusted and adapted to living in Melbourne, which is quite different to Vietnam. At the beginning I tried to be more social which is very important as it helped me make new friends.’
‘The community on campus is amazing. The Student Union has so many activities on Orientation day, in exam time and end of exam time. At La Trobe, there are so many clubs which help you find a balance between studying and living life. They’re also a great chance for you to connect to others at uni.’
‘I really enjoy studying and living in Australia. There are some unforgettable moments and I took part in some amazing events. I was involved in and organised many successful events such as free Great Ocean Road trip, Mt Buller trip, PR Consulting Seminar, and a movie night on campus.’
‘I also attended many volunteer activities in Melbourne namely, Moomba festival, Colour Run Festival, and support to school day at Preston Primary School.’
Of course, it isn’t all festivals and trips around the country. Manh also worked hard at his studies and was involved in some important ongoing work at the University.
‘I took part in a Business Intelligence Project at The Research Centre for Computers, Communication and Social Innovation (RECCSI) research centre.’
The goal of RECCSI is to develop innovative technologies to be used in areas such as aged care, health care, autism care, business intelligence and knowledge management. Manh contributed to this important research by ‘designing and implementing a knowledge management systems for RECCSI robots’.

Manh chose La Trobe to get ahead in his career and has gained a wealth of experience that he plans to use to benefit his home country.
‘I took the Master of Business Information Management (BIMS) at La Trobe because BIMS is suitable with my IT background and my passion for business.
‘My Master’s course helped me gain knowledge in business information management [and learn to] design and implement information systems which can support business.’
‘After I graduate, I will apply what I studied from La Trobe to build and implement a knowledge management system which will support the public sector in Vietnam.’
‘I will also contribute to Vietnam’s development by planning and designing some websites and Apps for Vietnam’s tourism, and Vietnamese training for foreigners and expats.’
